Tatom Travels: Rockin' Star Ranch
If you ask me and my girls, it’s always a good time for a quick getaway. Finishing the first 3 days of online school unscathed was cause enough for celebration at our house so we packed our bags, loaded up Luna Belle (AKA our car) and hit the road for Rockin’ Star Ranch. A quick trip to Trader Joe’s for some snacks on our way out of town and we were on our way.
RSR is about half way between Austin and Houston just outside of Brenham. From our doorstep in Lakeway to the Ranch is just over two hours; we made it in time for one of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve seen. As we pulled down the long road to the ranch, the air felt different, the grass smelled sweet and the sky lit up in colors you dream about. I have a weakness for sunsets and this one was nothing short of spectacular; even the girls squealed “Mom pull over so we can take pictures!” No filter needed.
Ranch owner Darrell Griffith runs this 150 acre piece of paradise and could not be nicer or more welcoming. He invited us to join him and a few other guests in the main house for dinner, but there are on site grills and a luxury outdoor kitchen poolside if you want to bring your own food. Restaurants are an easy 15-20 minutes away.
After dinner Darrell took us on a quick tour. He’s done so many cool things to the property; reclaimed wood and finish outs, custom designed light fixtures and chandeliers. He has a vision and skill for creating special touches that make the buildings on the property as unique as the land is beautiful. There’s a 7,000 square foot event space for weddings, parties and corporate retreats. (A rehearsal dinner was underway the night we arrived). The beautiful barn is equipped with stalls, a 25-thousand square foot horse arena, the recent additions of a couple of guest rooms and some lounge areas. It’s also available for rental for parties or events with capabilities to hold a real rodeo if you wanted to. Pretty cool! (I joked you could host a second wedding there and say “This ain’t our first rodeo.” Your girl loves a pun). Then we checked out the goats (Brad was my favorite!) the pigs (ornery and noisy but very funny) and Brynn “cuddled” with a chicken.
The animals on the property are part of the fun. Pens are easily accessible so if you need some therapy from a furry friend, you merely have to saunter from your cabin or cottage to where they are. We are city girls no doubt but we loved how gentle and sweet our new friends were. They’ve obviously taken hospitality lessons from Darrell. Our favorites had to be Axel and Daisy, two baby deer the girls bottle fed after our evening tour of the ranch. Axel gets so excited and waves his little hoof while he eats. Precious!
Time to settle in for the night. We stayed in the Garden Cottage which was set far enough away from the main house, pool and other cabins that you had plenty of privacy but close enough that we were just steps away from being in the mix. Our cottage had a comfy king bed and pull-out trundle so the four of us had plenty of room. A kitchenette with a microwave, fridge and coffee maker was perfect for our snacks and treats. The Wifi works great but there’s no TV: fine by me; we didn’t need it. Darrell built a fire in our private pit out back and I settled onto a bench and gazed at the stars for hours.
Note: The cottages and cabins are spotless but there is no daily housekeeping service. Darrell mentioned a (very) few visitors had issue with this, but I wanted to mention it jut so you’re aware. While it’s nice to have someone make the bed, it’s not a deal breaker for me by any means if that’s not part of plan. This is a vrbo style situation after all, not a hotel. Everything is lovely and clean, Darrell and his staff are wonderful and you are here to enjoy the peace, quiet and scenery. Wild horses (and an unmade bed) couldn’t keep me from coming back!
After a GREAT night’s sleep, the next morning the girls slept in while I took a walk and visited horses Lena and her baby Sleepy and took in more views of the ranch. Green and glorious as far as the eye can see, this isn’t the trip you take to stay busy and in the know, it’s the one you take to get your breath back and realize that a couple of days in God’s country can make you feel that all is right with the world again. Lila and Brynn found me in time to give Axel and Daisy their morning bottle. My babies feeding the babies!
Our afternoon was spent by the amazing pool. Beautifully landscaped with a rock waterfall, plenty of pool toys and floats are provided and comfy lounge chairs beckon for you to stay a while. I made a charcuterie tray from our Trader Joe’s haul and we snacked, swam and soaked in the sun. We stayed on the relaxation train by following our pool day with a long nap in our cool and comfy cottage.
We woke from our nap frisky and refreshed. You certainly don’t have to feel compelled to wear makeup and all that fancy stuff at the ranch: come as you are and enjoy. But we decided we would head into town for Mexican food so showers and outfit selections were underway when Darrell knocked on the door and asked if we were coming on the hayride. He said it was not to be missed. Sold! (Hayride times and availability vary but chances are if it’s a weekend and Darrell is up for it, there’s going to be one. Talk to him for details when you book). 30 minutes later the girls were riding in the cab of the truck and I was back on the trailer perched on a bale of hay alongside a fun group of cheer moms, their daughters and a few sweet couples. As we headed away from the main house and out to the pasture, one of the ranch hands opened a gate and within seconds cow after cow after steer after cow was running beside us, then along side us, then catching up to us mooing and snorting and flapping their ears. It was hilarious and joyful and magical. They were a little stinky but mostly beautiful. We drove a bit with them following closely along then stopped on a gentle hill with the ranch behind us. Again God painted the most exquisite sunset. Darrell handed out feed and the cattle ate right out of our hands. We hopped off the trailer and took it all in. The elk in the distance. The cows mooing right beside us. The big sky wrapped around us. And in that moment as the sun set across my beloved home state with my daughters and these kind strangers and Darrell and all creatures great and small, there was no where else in the world I would have rather been.
Post hayride we headed to dinner on a natural country high: the smiles and laughter were contagious and we chatted about the cows and the hayride and how sweet and special it was. I could see the worry of quarantine and online school had melted away from all of us and we truly just enjoyed each other in the simplest of ways. Not on a first class flight. Not on a big vacation with a sight seeing itinerary. Not with our phones or our Netflix. But on a ranch outside a small Texas town where the main sources of entertainment were critters and creatures and sunsets. After dinner we pulled back into the gate and Lila said “I don’t want to leave tomorrow.” Neither did I.
Another fantastic night’s sleep (y’all, sleeping in the country is just better, I swear) and we were greeted by the morning. I laid down on the gliding front porch bench to listen to the sounds of the ranch while I slowly drank a cup of coffee. Time to wake the girls and pack up. We said goodbye to the animals and found Darrell to thank him for the wonderful stay. Our visit to Rockin’ Star Ranch was one of the most simple yet special trips we have taken together. This busy momma and her busy girls are very much looking forward to going back soon. It is the ultimate in recharging and reconnecting. There’s a bit of magic scattered all over the ranch. And we highly recommend you make the trip!
