Driver's Seat Style
As y’all know I love fashion. Combining clothes and accessories for me is a true expression of creativity. For important events I plan what I will wear in advance but on the day to day, I typically let my mood dictate my ensemble. It was one morning on the way to work in 2015 that I decided to start documenting a part of my #ootd along with an accessory (typically a statement ring, bracelet or sometimes a clutch) in a photograph and posting it to Instagram. I spend a LOT of time in my car, driving myself and my girls to and from anywhere and everywhere. As a single mom and the head of our household, I am in the driver’s seat literally and figuratively. As I studied my outfit that day which was comprised of sequins, feathers and denim (typical) I looked down and thought “Here you are in the driver’s seat and you’re trying to give people a peek at your style…” and #driversseatstyle was born.
That first post wasn’t my best work with the camera. I wish I had taken a wider shot so it would have been easier for people looking at the pic to figure out what was going on. But over time I got the hang of it and the pictures were a good chance to showcase my own personal style choices as well as clothing and accessories loaned to me by local boutiques. Gradually I added in props: candy at Halloween, tickets to Dell Match Play, and more than once my “Amanda special” drink from Starbuck’s. I also love puns and writing and being tricky with innuendo and words so it’s fun to come up with (what I hope are) clever captions and hashtags. Oh the power of words.
Driver’s seat style is also a fun way to show a mix of high-low which in my opinion is the most fun way to create an outfit. There is no reason fashion and certainly the inspiration for fashion cannot and should not be accessible to everyone. I love combining a Chanel clutch with a $10 skirt from Le Garage Sale. I love a stack of bracelets and a statement ring one day and a simple pair of ripped jeans and a tee the next. And I love the way it looks from my point of view in the driver’s seat. No matter what stray French fries, dry cleaning or library books are lurking in my back seat, typically my #driversseatstyle post is a semi-organized and aesthetically pleasing pic of what’s up fashion-wise for the day. Except when the occasional phone charger cord makes a cameo.
Another part of these posts is that now my followers have been inspired to show me their #driversseatstyle and I absolutely LOVE their interpretations! I have some of the funniest, wittiest and coolest followers around and to see your take on this little “thing” I do not only flatters me more than you will ever know, it inspires me as well. Keep sending them in! And whether you’re wearing spandex or couture, may your time in the driver’s seat be purposeful, stylish and fun.
